Plant Taxonomy
An overview of the principles of plant taxonomy , including morphology, nomenclature, classification methods, collecting methods and herbarium methods, and identification techniques.
Bryology
An overview of the morphology, evolution, biogeography, ecology, classification, and identification of the mosses, liverworts, and hornworts.
Tropical Biology
An overview of forest types, physical characteristics, vegetative characteristics, plant/animal interactions, ecology, species diversity, and the impact of humans on tropical regions of the world. Emphasis is on evolution and the causes of biodiversity in tropical regions.
Biosystematics
The study of modern and traditional taxonomic methodologies, employing descriptive and observational, analytical and experimental, and synthetical and theoretical approaches. Discussions include the species concept, classification methods, and the rules of nomenclature.
Woody Plants
Discussions of the morphology, identification, and economic uses of the major woody plant families, emphasizing the Central Midwestern United States. Included are discussions of the major tropical woody plant families and their identification and economic importance.
Agrostology
An overview of the major tribes and genera of grasses with emphasis on morphology and identification.
Aquatic Plants
An overview of the families of aquatic plants with emphasis on collection and identification. Field trips required.
Ethnobotany
Discussions of plants used my native peoples, with emphasis on Latin America. Included are discussions of plants used for medicial and ceromonial purposes.
Human Uses of Plants
An overview of plants domesticated through human history, including those used for food, medicine, perfumes, latexes, resins, fibers, dyes, ornamentals and others.
